Tsunami warnings for Australia's east coast

'Tsunami waves with times from Chile 8.8 magnitude earthquake'    .

Strong currents and higher than normal king tides will be reaching the eastern coast of Australia today, advises the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre which added that the water conditions will affect people swimming, surfing, diving or boating, and the unforeseen dangers.

The alert follows a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake which struck off the coast of Chile, toppling buildings, cutting power and pushing the death toll beyond 200.

The JATWC has issued a tsunami alert, declaring a 'potential tsunami threat' for Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island.

Australia's distance from Chile would not matter when tsunami conditions arrive.

People are urged not to go down to beaches or head lands 'for a look' over the next 2 days, as conditions could last for as long as that with significant changes in water levels,' he said.

The first effects of the tsunami have reached south-eastern Australia and will then progressively affect the remainder of New South Wales and Queensland.'

A tsunami warning is in place for areas from Port Clinton, near Yeppoon, in Queensland, stretching south along the coasts of NSW, Victoria and Tasmania.
