Aiming to put Cyprus and surrounding waters firmly on the superyacht map, developers of the Karpaz Gate Marina have spared no expense to create a sheltered haven in a relatively unexplored region of the Med, complete with dry stack, lift and state-of-the-art maintenance facilities, due to open in 2011. Located on the Karpaz peninsula of Northern Cyprus and officially endorsed by the Department of Tourism of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Karpaz Gate Marina a huge boost, the development will target yacht owners and charter companies. Already underway, with 14 caissons in place on the main breakwater, more than 400m of this area is now complete (out of a total of 650m). The secondary breakwater is also moving along, with 90m of the 150m complete. The breakwater areas of Karpaz Gate will ensure a sheltered environment for yachts needing either a home port or visiting berth in the eastern Mediterranean. Work has started on the marina buildings. Because much of this area will be built on ground that was formerly sea, special foundations are being created in the form of a huge concrete platform. Excavators are already at work and concrete is now being poured as this area takes shape. A very tall pylon is also being considered which will be topped by a light feature. This will act as both a guide to ease yachts’ passage into the marina, and also as a landmark for Karpaz Gate, putting this exclusive destination well and truly on the map. The Karpaz peninsula is one of the Mediterranean’s last remaining wildernesses, and could be considered an undiscovered yachting area. Visitors can expect clear blue waters, unspoilt bays and coves and beautiful sandy beaches. Ashore, the landscape is gently rolling and home to ancient Byzantine churches and a tiny population that’s all but outnumbered by the area’s indigenous wild donkeys. The marina has been built to cause minimum disruption to this unique place, with materials that sensitively complement the landscape. Once the marina has been completed, no further development will be allowed, ensuring that this wild and beautiful corner of the eastern Mediterranean remains just that.
 | The region is replete with Byzantine Churches, rustic villages and wild donkeys. - MIAA | Despite the peace and isolation the area offers, it’s surprisingly well connected. The popular yacht cruising areas of southern and south western Turkey are nearby and the international airports of Larnaca and Ercan are under an hour’s drive away. That sense of convenience will continue at the marina. All vessels based or visiting Karpaz Gate Marina will have access to a 18,000sqm dry dock for refit and repairs to aid with both maintenance and boat storage. The dry dock facilities are now larger than was originally planned, ensuring Karpaz Gate Marina becomes the most important maintenance centre in this part of the Mediterranean. The marina has been designed in accordance with BMF codes of practice and in line with recent requests from superyacht owners. The infrastructure, for example, will have capacity to accommodate the electricity requirements of megayahcts. There will also be enough space for superyachts to manoeuvre within the marina. Facilities such as battery, sewage and oil disposal, as well as fuel, will be conveniently positioned for both classes of vessel. Sixteen berths will be created for boats that are up to 60 metres in length and these will be placed near the promenade, ensuring a privileged position close to the marina’s exemplary amenities. Karpaz Gate Marina is set to enhance its offering to visitors by purchasing a 300 tonne crane. Originally, the plan was for a 180 tonne crane but it was felt that it was important to offer visitors the best possible refit and repair facilities. This will certainly be the case. The crane will be the largest in the TRNC and larger than most on the Turkish coast. By the end of 2012, the marina will also benefit from a casino and hotel, the luxurious 7-star Karpaz Peninsula Hotel. Visitors will enjoy a first-class range of facilities including WiFi, bars, cafés, restaurants, car hire, travel services, a cinema and chandlery. State-of-the-art security cameras will ensure the safety of yachts and visitors at all times. There will be 300 berths in total, each enjoying generous allotted space in a minimum of 5m draught (with some up to 6.5m), while the marina will have a draught of at least 4m. At a later date, the Karpaz Bay Hotel will add to the attractions on site. It is expected that, from the start, the marina will enjoy duty-free status. More at www.karpazbay.com
