SOS Ocean Racing is setting off in the first week of May to break the world record for solo non-stop circumnavigation of Australia. It has been announced today that Maxsea will be the onboard navigation system for SOS for their journey.

Developed over many years with Vendee Globe champion Michel Desjoyeaux (The professor), Ian Thomson has chosen Maxsea due to it's ease of use. Ian stated 'Many would say that Maxsea is not of racing standard but quite simply it has too many race victories to argue against. The God of solo racing uses it so it has to be good. I have relied on it since 2001 and have become very accustomed to knowing it is usually spot on with it's forecasts. However it is the ease of use that makes Maxsea brilliant for races, cruisers or fisherman all over the world.'

Maxsea Time Zero Technology is the latest and greatest version with no redraw time. Ian states 'Rather than wait for a page to be redrawn, it is like flying around in a plane and when you put it into 3D with satellite images overlaid, it is just amazing. There is nothing like it on the market' Ian has integrated the Maxsea system with his Furuno electronics and hence can get radar overlay on the Maxsea as well. It can also run his auto-pilot which means Ian can focus on the trimming of sails and getting the peak performance out of the boat.

The routing module will give Ian the optimum route to take which is proving a key to when Ian actually leaves. 'With a 16 day forecast available, I have put in the polars of my boat and it will tell me how far I can get in those 16 days.

Waiting for the right weather pattern to link up across the top of Australia is vital to getting around in record time. The last thing I want to do is park up near Darwin for a week or two.' The system is also hooked up to the Icom AIS receiver so Ian can simply sit at his computer and keep watch or when he is sleeping, leave Maxsea in charge with alarms set for all sorts of reasons to bring Ian alert to any obstacle that might be coming his way.
