UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship - Based on its experience acquired over twenty years of activity, and maintaining its institutional role of the representation and protection of the interests of teams participating, the board of directors of the International Offshore Team Association (IOTA), has today officially presented its candidature to the sport’s world governing body, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), to reacquire the worldwide commercial rights to Class 1, for the next five years, based on the following principles:

- appointment of a commercial partner to take on the function of promoter in a time frame and by means to be agreed with the UIM.

- identification of teams participating in the Championship on the basis of acceptance of the technical and sporting rules to be approved by the UIM Offshore Professional Committee (OPC).

- presentation of a racing calendar in accordance with the format agreed with the UIM following the criteria indicated by the teams and the commercial partner.

- management of the Championship making use of the professional structure that has been organising Class 1 events since 1997.

IOTA is advocating and giving its full support to the revision of the technical rules, which aim to reduce overall running costs, boost team participation, improve competition between teams and place the emphasis on driver ability.

The new rules will be presented during the 83rd UIM General Assembly in Malta in October to the OPC by Class 1 Technical Director, Patrick Heslop.

The principles already agreed by all teams competing in the 2010 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship will include:

- a reduction in RPM to increase the longevity and reliability of engines to run for four to five races.

- with regard to crew control and systems: steering must be either drives or rudder, not both, with steerable drives to be homologated before acceptance for racing.

- in respect of boat and equipment: hull and machinery for each boat must be listed with commercially available prices, and all equipment is to be available commercially to teams or potential teams. The OPC may investigate any component considered to be excessive in price or not as per the original, and take the necessary action to either ban or suspend its use.

- and for the remainder of the 2010 season there will be a programme to fit and test a horsepower/torque and RPM sensor and data logger, currently used in other series, to be implemented officially from 2011 with the aim of avoiding any possible cheating.
