Big regattas for Victorian yacht club
|
The weather for McCrae Yacht Club's Opening Day may not have been friendly but the welcome certainly was. As Commodore Steve Berryman opened proceedings he focused on the youth of McCrae and their contribution to the club. Highlighting the group of young Race Officers, members of the Sailing, Training and General Committees as what sets McCrae apart from other yacht clubs. The clubs reputation as a major regatta venue was demonstrated when Club Captain Simon Merritt announced the Class National, State and Youth Championships the club will be hosting over the coming seasons. This summer will see the club host two Olympic class Nationals – the 49er and 49erFX, an ISAF Youth class Nationals – 29er and the Pacer Nationals. The Pacer regatta will no doubt see many families taking part - a great opportunity for parents and younger siblings of 29er sailors to join in the fun on the water. In April 2013 and 2014 the club will host the OAMPS Victorian Youth and Junior Championships. This is the final event in the Victorian Sailing Cup series and the peak event for Youth and Junior sailors in Victoria. Summer 2013/14 will see the club host the Laser Nationals that will see at least 150 boats take to the water off McCrae; this will provide spectacular viewing for the holidaymakers on the beach! Jessica Vincent rounded off the speeches officially opening the 2012/2013 sailing season. Focusing her attention on her role as Youth Club Captain, her first forays in to sailing and her delight at the inclusive nature of McCrae. Emphasising that McCrae is a place where youngsters discover a new passion that will stay with them for life Jessica spoke of how the youth of McCrae are the future and they will lead the club in the coming decades. As a club run by volunteers the club is not only a fun, family friendly club but also gaining a reputation as one of the best places in Australia to hold a regatta.
