Barham River boasts a brand new fishing platform

DPI Victoria
Department of Primary Industries - Local and visiting anglers to Apollo Bay in southwest Victoria can now enjoy improved access on the banks of the Barham River.

Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria, Anthony Hurst, said $30,110 had been provided from the Enhanced Recreational Fishing Program towards building a fully accessible fishing platform and other associated on-ground works.

'The new platform, at the bottom of Gambier Street, is spacious and allows anglers of all ages and abilities to fish comfortably for species such as black bream, estuary perch and brown trout,' Mr Hurst said.

'A bitumen car parking area has also been created along with an access path leading to the platform.

'Before these improvements were made anglers had to contend with unstable and slippery banks.

'The new platform provides anglers with a much safer option for fishing this great little river.

'However this is not the only improvement that anglers will see on future visits to Apollo Bay. Two new fish cleaning tables are soon to be installed though the Enhanced Recreational Fishing Program.

'One table will be positioned at the boat ramp and will cater for the offshore anglers. Another table specifically designed for installation on piers will be positioned on the main wharf to service the large volume of land-based anglers that this structure attracts.'
