A Mackay Queensland inventor, whose day job is as a machinery operator, has come up with a propeller that aims to save lives and limbs. ‘It's a safety propeller, that will not sever your arms or legs and it's obviously safe for all the marine life as well,’ said inventor, Colin Chamberlain. Colin Chamberlain has been recognised for his creation of the Environmental Safety Propeller. He took out the grand final of the New Inventors program. ‘It’s a bit surreal. There were some great inventions, all brilliant in their own field,’ he said. 'Out of a group of five, I expected to come 4th or 5th.' http://www.abc.net.au/tv/newinventors/txt/s2736928.htm The Safety Propeller is almost identical to a regular propeller, and it'll perform just as well says Chamberlain, but a slight yet crucial design variation means people are not at risk. With just a simple design modification of the leading edge, the 'Environmental Safety Propeller' as it’s now known, is completely safe to use. 'It’s actually a rounded edge now instead of being sharp. And it can basically run over you and it'll just bump you out of the road,' said Chamberlain, himself the guinea pig throughout the process, which took nine years 'from scribble to manufacture-ready'. 'It’s hard to explain' said the softly spoken Chamberlain. 'It’s just like a standard prop and made out of the same materials.' The ingenuity of the product has been praised by boating and fishing enthusiasts, many of whom ‘blogged’ on the ABC network’s site recounting their own close calls or injuries as a result of collision with regular propellers. Chamberlain says there's been a lot of interest from overseas, including the US Coast Guard, Navy and Marins, and he’s looking for an investor to take on the production rights. ‘We're hoping to get the safety prop to do for boats what the seatbelts have done for cars many years ago,’ he said, adding that the focus will be the US to begin with, because of the high production costs associated with the product. Colin Chamberlain works in power line construction, but he has loved boating and inventing most of his life. He patented his first invention 20 years ago and has continued to invent since. In his spare time he enjoys fishing, motorbike riding and 'building things'.
