The Marina Industries Association of Australia is now offering a nationally recognized Statement of Attainment in Straddle Carrier Operations and Maintenance.

Industry professionals have identified key competencies - MEM11010B Operate Mobile Load Shifting Equipment, MEM13014A Apply Principals of Occupational Health and Safety in the Work Environment and MEM16006A Organise and Communicate Information - to be the essential skills required for the operation of straddle carriers in the safest and most efficient manner.

In order to offer this course as nationally recognized training, MIAA formed a partner relationship with Registered Training Organisation - Survival First Response (Aust) Pty Ltd.

This is a two day intensive on-site course with one day of theory and one day of practical boat lift demonstrations and practice. Topics covered include organising and communicating information, occupational health and safety, checklist and maintenance logs, and lifting, standing, blocking and stabilizing procedures for a vessel up to 100 tonnes.

The course content has been mapped in accordance with the required knowledge and skills set by the Australian Industry Skills Council. Essential assessment procedures have been set to enable MIAA trainers and industry professionals to co-assess the competence of participants through a variety of assessment tools.

These include group activities, short answer questions, workplace practice and completion of a “lifts log book” and onsite or video evidence of a successful lift encompassing all required knowledge and skills.

Another benefit to those interested in course participation is the units of competency are part of the skills set required in Certificate 11, 111, and 1V in Boating Services.

MIAA ran this program initially at Sydney City Marine 20-21 June 2009 with a group of six students. The course was judged a huge success by faculty, participants and management at Sydney City Marine. Participants now have 3 months to complete workplace practice and lodge their log books and evidence of competency to become among the first in the world to gain this new Statement of Attainment.

The MIAA hopes by presenting the course workplaces practices will be improved and most importantly workplace accidents reduced.
