Emirates Team New Zealand have been elevated to third position after the first race of the Audi MedCup.
The race was won on the water by Marazzi Sailing (Switzerland) sailing (along with ETNZ) in their first ever MedCup race.
The first attempt at racing was abandoned after the first leg when the light wind died. PredictWind earlier had shown light airs for the day reaching a peak of 8kts before dying off.
The first race of the Audi MedCup Circuit for the TP52 Series had to be abandoned when the wind all but evaporated at the first leeward gate. Bribon, 2007 winners on Alicante, had lead to the windward mark and through the gate.
Although fourth on the water, Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL) had a spirited joust at times with the current Audi MedCup Champions Quantum Racing (USA), and skipper Dean Barker and tactician Ray Davies kept the upper hand across the finish line to take fourth, 27 seconds ahead of the American boat.

Marazzi Sailing, the 2008 Reichel Pugh design Artemis, were always able to keep control of the fleet, extending slightly over Alberto Roemmers’ new Matador which took second place. Recovery of the day was that of the Portuguese team Bigamist 7 which was clearly over the start line early at the extreme left end of the start line. Tactician Hugo Rocha ushered helm Afonso Domingos towards the right flank of the course and they were well placed to also reap the dividend as the small wind shift arrived, going on to finish third.
Following the race, Mazzari Sailing was protested following a crew weight check and were found to be slightly over the prescribed maximum. The International imposed a three points penalty dropping them back to fourth overall, and elevating Emirates Team New Zealand to third.
PredictWind is showing increased winds for tomorrow, with one of their sources indicating that the breeze will start light in the morning, building to 16kts in mid-afternoon - a welcome respite for the crews from today's conditions.
